Rebellion Days

IRON RIVER—Iron River Community Concepts invites everyone to the fourth annual Rum Rebellion Days, July 15-18, with a “Salute to the Courthouse.”

The weekend will commemorate the 120th anniversary of the construction of the historic Iron County Courthouse. Some changes were made to the schedule, which the committee believes will tighten up and enhance the weekend.

The weekend will include the major events of the past. There will be the Iron County Museum’s wine and cheese event on Thursday, July 15. The wine and cheese event has developed into a popular social evening.

On Friday, July 16, the Rum Rebellion Days Market Days will be held on downtown Iron River.

Market Days, featuring many vendors, will be from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The West Iron District Library will have a bake sale and will offer historic photo opportunities. The Recreation Association of Iron County will have the golf challenge. There will be a pie sale at the old Iron River Fire Hall.

Also on Friday, the Rum Rebellion Revue will highlight historic events associated with the Courthouse, again using the format of a radio dramatization.

The Rum Rebellion Revue Players will be present to take on the roles of historic figures and the musical group, the Pixies, will offer musical presentations associated with the time period.

There will be one performance of the Revue at 7 p.m. at Windsor Auditorium.

This year, the Revue will be a repeat performance at the Crystal Theater, scheduled for Friday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, July 17, the Rum Rebellion Days historic parade will march off at 10 a.m. from the West Iron County High School parking lot.

Themes that the units will be able to use include the Rum Rebellion, the 1890s or the Courthouse salute. Plaques will be awarded in several categories.

New to this year’s parade will be the Superior Pipes and Drum Marching Band of Marquette County. The Superior Model “A” Club will also participate in the parade with vintage vehicles.

Following the parade, the Superior Pipes and Drums will present a musical program downtown and the Superior Model “A” Club vehicles will be on display.

There will be a concession set up downtown at 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The weekend will close with the Rum Rebellion Days Costume Ball at the Iron County Museum on Sunday, July 18, at 1 p.m.

Rum Rebellion Days are sponsored by Iron River Community Concepts, with financial support from the Iron River Downtown Development Authority (DDA).

CASPIAN—Buon Giorno! Buon Giorno! will be the greeting of the day on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 15, when people celebrate Italian Day at the Iron County Museum here.  The festivities will begin at noon with plate lunches featuring cold porketta sandwiches for sale as a special luncheon treat.  The musical entertainment will begin at 12:30 when Sally Blyze will lead an hour long sing-along in Toti's Tavern. Fungus Fest

What is a Humungus Fungus?

Several years ago a "humongous fungus" (a gigantic mushroom) was discovered in the Crystal Falls area. It weighs roughly 11 tons and covers 37 acres. This makes it the largest mushroom (fungus) in the world - it's hard to believe this monster mushroom is growing in Michigan and not Texas! Based on the average rate of growth through the soil, the Humongous Fungus is probably more than 1,500 years old.

After the benevolent giant mushroom was discovered it did not take long for the city fathers to decide to share this wonder with the world - hence "The Humungus Fungus Fest" was born.

For three days each August tourists and locals alike celebrate this giant fungus phenomenon with a spectacular celebration. The main event seems to be the making and eating of the HUMUNGUS PIZZA.  The fungus topped pizza is 10 feet by 10 feet! It is the largest mushroom pizza in the world.

There is also an extensive assortment of other activities such as a Buckboard and Horseshoe Tournament; a Tube Float - here's your chance to float down a river on an old tire tube; or register for the Volley Ball or Golf Tournament. If your tastes run to a more sedentary pastime you can begin the day at the Veterans of Foreign Wars' Hall for a Pancake Breakfast then view the Fungus Fest Parade, watch the softball game, or gobble up ice cream at the Ice Cream Social then toddle on over to the Pie Social for home made pies. If you are still able to walk the Salad Luncheon at St. Mark's Church offers tasty culinary selections. At the end of the day pull up a chair and view a fabulous fireworks display - a bang-pow! conclusion for a fabulous event.

Iron County Fine Arts Show

CASPIAN—The annual Iron County Fine Arts Show opens Wednesday, Aug. 11, at the Iron County Museum here.

Submissions will be accepted until Tuesday, Aug. 10, for hanging and display, said a museum spokesperson.

Among items already accepted for the show are paintings, drawings, photographs and carvings. The exhibition will be in place until Aug. 24.

The show was started by the Twentieth Century Club and the Stambaugh Women’s Club with Margaret Cooper and Marcia Bernhardt as co-chairs in about 1962, said the spokesperson.

The first show was held in the store windows on the main street in Iron River.

“The response was so great to the appeal for artwork that it was necessary to use the Armory floor to spread out all the entries and make selections for exhibits in individual stores,” said the spokesperson.

“When the women’s clubs no longer existed, the show was taken over by the Historical Society and the exhibition found a home in the museum’s Cultural Center.”

This year, special attention will be directed to the regular exhibits in the Cultural Center as well. Among them are the ceramic statues of Izzie Salo and Rachel Kangas created by Mary Lundin Kudo at the entrance, and 32 wood cuts by Mary Kale reflecting the occupations, historical events, people and wildlife of Iron County.

Both artists’ careers and reputations extend beyond Iron County and the state of Michigan.

Attention will also be drawn to the special exhibit of the entries by children created for this summer’s Ferrous Frolics, an opportunity for “budding” artists to be introduced.

The public is invited to “Meet the Artists” special reception and viewing on Tuesday evening, Aug. 17. They will also be able to look at the exhibition on Italian Day and on the occasion of the evening program on the Hubble Telescope presented by Dr. Albert Holm on Monday, Aug. 16.
